How Exactly Does Leak Detection Work?

American Leak Detection believes in full transparency for our leak detection processes. Our customers deserve to know exactly how we do it! Our approach varies depending on the job type and what symptoms are present.

CAUSE & ORIGIN LEAK DETECTION

Typically, our technicians first inspect the water-damaged area and assess the potential causes. Moisture readings are taken. If plumbing is nearby, we proceed with checking all sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, and appliances for leaks. Sometimes, it is necessary to cut a small hole into the wall or ceiling to provide access to the plumbing. If no plumbing leaks are found, we then begin to assess other potential causes – such as roofs, gutters, windows, basements, and even the pitch of the landscape. If the cause and origin of the water damage are still not apparent, our technicians can proceed with water spray tests to narrow down the culprit.

UNDERGROUND WATER LINE LEAK DETECTION

Underground leaks can be elusive, especially since water is known to travel. The first step in our typical underground water line leak detection process is to conduct a meter test to confirm unaccounted water usage. Click here to learn how to conduct a meter test at home. Next, our technicians typically proceed with a pressure test. Lost pressure indicates a break in the line, allowing water to escape. While continuing to induce SCUBA-grade air into the line, our technicians then utilize specialized listening equipment that detects the sound leaks produce underground to narrow down the location.

SWIMMING POOL & SPA LEAK DETECTION

American Leak Detection can assist with finding leaks in both above-ground and in-ground pools. If you are unsure whether you’re losing water to a leak or evaporation, you can conduct a bucket test at home. Prior to scheduling our technicians, we ask that the pool be filled to its normal operating level and is clear enough to see through to the bottom of the deep end. Once those criteria are met, we can proceed to find the cause of your water loss. Plumbing lines are plugged and pressure tested. Lost pressure indicates a break in the line, allowing water to escape. While continuing to induce SCUBA-grade air into the line, our technicians then utilize specialized listening equipment to narrow down the leak location. Liners are scanned with our electronic Aqua Snoop scanner. Any additional leaks are found by diving in and utilizing dye tests.

SEWER GAS LEAK DETECTION

If you are experiencing a sewer odor but don’t see any water damage, it’s possible you have a sewer gas leak in one of your vent lines. American Leak Detection can conduct a smoke test to identify these types of leaks. A smoke test actually utilizes a vapor that is 100% child-safe and pet-safe – no real smoke is involved. First, our technicians will climb onto the roof and plug the vents. Next, they will find somewhere to induce the vapor into the system. With the lines plugged at the top, the vapor will need to find the next path of least resistance to escape. Our technicians will then search the entire building for any signs of that vapor, which will indicate the leak location.
